Whether you are a music geek or a usual music lover, you might have heard of the Billboard chart. It is a music industry standard, music chart for singles. In the United States it is published weekly by the Billboard magazine. The tracks are positioned based on sales, online streaming and radio play. The Billboard chart is by and large a benchmark by which the popularity of a song is determined.

In the 1950s the criteria to measure the popularity of the song was best sellers in stores, most played by jockeys and most played in jukeboxes. Towards the end of 1950, Billboard stopped considering the song most played in jukeboxes since the jukebox was dominated by the rock culture. As the time passed by the charts were more concentrated on the sales figures of complete album instead of singles. Eventually, the benchmark criterion has undergone several modifications throughout the chart history.

Currently, Billboard considers certain percentage levels of the sales, airplay and streaming. Although the average ratio varies every week but generally the sales figures dominate the other two. However, there have been certain exceptions where the song is driven largely by airplay, like the ‘Love Somebody’ by Maroon 5 that jumped from No.67 to No.10 with 67% from airplay, just 19% from sales and 13% from streaming. So, uncertainties and surprises keep striking the Billboard charts.

Some of the all time favorite artists of the Billboard chart are The Beatles, Madonna, Elton John, Elvis Presley, Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, The Rolling Stones, Bee Gees, Chicago, Usher and many more. These unforgettable artists have dominated the Billboard chart since decades and still continue to rule our hearts.

The Billboard music awards are one of the most celebrated and renowned music awards. The awards were held every year from 1989 to 2006. Followed by the 5 year of dormancy, the awards revived in 2011. The recent Billboard music awards were aired on May 22nd 2016. The list is finalized after considering the Nielsen data for sales, number of downloads and airplay time. The Billboard’s first Spotlight award was won by Michael Jackson in the year 1988. He became the first artist ever to hit the Billboard chart with five consecutive ones singles from one single album.
